Berlin 2026: Euro 6 Diesel Needs Only a EUR 5 Badge

Checked against official sources 20 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-19

Berlin’s diesel line is Euro 4, so a Euro 6 sits two classes above it and qualifies for the green Plakette without any further test — the city has never added a diesel Fahrverbot. The badge itself is the obligation: EUR 5 at Berlin’s registration counter, EUR 6 online, and EUR 100 if it is not on the glass inside the S-Bahn ring.

An unusually plain rule for a diesel

Germany’s stricter cities answer a diesel question in two parts — does the badge admit you, and does a separate ban exclude you anyway. Berlin only asks the first. The green Plakette has been compulsory inside the ring since 1 January 2010, diesel qualifies for it from Euro 4 or from Euro 3 with a retrofitted particulate filter, and no further restriction has been layered on top. A Euro 6 diesel meets the only test there is.

The widely quoted EUR 5-15 is a national range rather than Berlin’s own price. For a foreign-registered car, applying about three weeks before the trip is the safe margin.

Where the boundary runs, and where it does not

The zone is the 88 km² inside the S-Bahn ring — around a tenth of Berlin’s area, holding more than a million of its 3.7 million residents. Two exclusions help a driver crossing the city: the southern city motorway with its slip roads, and the Elsenbruecke. One inclusion catches people: Kanzowstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg is inside the zone despite lying outside the ring.

How it is checked, and why parked cars get tickets

There is no emission camera. The Plakette is read by eye — police at the roadside, parking control on foot — which is why the EUR 100 lands as often on a windscreen outside a restaurant as it does on a moving car. An eligible Euro 6 diesel with no badge is treated exactly like a Euro 2 one.

Berlin checklist for this car

  • ✅ Confirm Euro 6 on the certificate of conformity rather than inferring it from the plate
  • ✅ Order the green badge in advance: EUR 5 in person, EUR 6 posted, up to 14 days
  • ✅ Fix it to the windscreen — eligibility alone is no defence
  • ✅ Note the southern city motorway and the Elsenbruecke are outside the zone
  • ✅ Plan Munich and Stuttgart separately; their diesel bans have no Berlin equivalent
