Amsterdam 2026: Euro 6 Diesel Clears the Class 5 Floor

Inside the A10 ring Amsterdam asks diesel cars for emission class 5. A Euro 6 diesel sits a class above that, so the 2010 registration year changes nothing — and there is no sticker to buy, because the check is done on the plate.

Class, not age

The Beleidsregels ontheffingen milieuzone Amsterdam 2026, in force since 1 January 2026, require diesel passenger cars inside the whole A10 ring to be emission class 5 or better. A car certified Euro 6 meets that with a class in hand. An early Euro 6 certification in 2010 is unusual, but the register records the class, and the class is what the cameras compare against.

The zone has layers

The car rule stops at the A10 boundary. Between the A10 and the S100 the city adds diesel vans at class 5 and diesel lorries at class 6, and inside the S100 vans and lorries have to be zero-emission altogether. Nothing in those inner layers reaches a private diesel car, but they explain why signage tightens as you drive toward the centre.

Nothing to display

There is no Dutch equivalent of the Umweltplakette. Plates are read by camera and looked up in the national vehicle register, which already holds the fuel type and emission class, so no vignette is ordered and nothing goes on the windscreen. Carrying the registration document is still sensible for a roadside stop.

What a mismatch costs

A restricted vehicle that enters pays the national Mulder tariff: EUR 130 for a passenger car, van or bus, and EUR 320 for a lorry. It is set nationally, so the figure does not move from city to city — and it does not reach this car, which is a class clear of the floor.

Exemptions worth knowing

Electric vehicles are outside the scheme, and petrol cars are not screened by it at all. Neither route is needed here: this diesel qualifies on its own emission class.
