Warsaw SCT 2026: Euro 5 Diesel Is Exactly the Line

Stage II of Warsaw’s Strefa Czystego Transportu has applied since 1 January 2026: diesels built before 2009 or rated below Euro 5 may not enter. A 2018 diesel Euro 5 meets that exactly. Nothing is bought or displayed — the check is against the national vehicle register, and the penalty of up to 500 zł comes from the police or the municipal guard, not from a camera.

A pass with no margin behind it

Warsaw sets two lines in its current stage: petrol and LPG from Euro 3 or a build year from 2000, and diesel from Euro 5 or a build year from 2009. A 2018 Euro 5 diesel satisfies the diesel line on both tests at once, but it sits on it rather than above it, so read the rating off the registration document rather than inferring it from the year. The city’s own checker at sprawdzsct.zdm.waw.pl settles it in half a minute.

Nothing to buy, nothing to display

For a compliant car there is no sticker, no application and no notification. The 5 zł sticker that exists is for drivers claiming an exemption with a vehicle that would otherwise be too old, and the city notes there is no penalty for failing to display one. The offence is driving a vehicle that should not be in the zone at all — not a missing document.

Who writes the ticket

Not the cameras. Warsaw states that its SCT cameras are there to analyse traffic and that the roads authority has no power to issue tickets. Checks are made by the police and the Straż Miejska against the central vehicle register, and the penalty is up to 500 zł under article 96c of the Code of Petty Offences. Anyone quoting an automatic camera fine for this zone is describing a system Warsaw does not operate.

The four entries everyone gets

Every driver may enter the zone four times in a calendar year regardless of the vehicle’s standard, with nothing to arrange in advance; the penalty applies from the fifth. It is not a visitor concession — the same rule covers residents, other Poles and foreign drivers alike. For this car the allowance is irrelevant, but it matters if an older second vehicle joins the trip.

Where the zone is

37 km², roughly 7% of the city: all of Śródmieście plus slices of the surrounding central districts. The boundary streets themselves are outside the zone, which is a useful detail when choosing where to park.

The date this verdict expires

Stage III in 2028 raises the requirement to petrol Euro 4 and diesel Euro 6. A Euro 5 diesel is compliant today and will not be then. Warsaw taxpayers hold an exemption until the end of 2027 for vehicles last registered before 1 January 2024, and drivers who turned 70 by the end of 2023 keep an indefinite exemption for one nominated vehicle — neither of which is available to a visitor.
