Stuttgart 2026: Euro 5 Diesel Stops at the Small Zone
A 2018 Euro 5 diesel is above Stuttgart’s city-wide ban, which stops at Euro 4. It is still refused by the small environmental zone — the central basin plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen — where Euro 6 has been required since July 2020.

Two bans, one city
Stuttgart layers a diesel traffic ban on top of an ordinary green-sticker Umweltzone. The city’s own Dieselverkehrsverbot page sets out both: diesel Euro 4 and worse has been banned across the entire municipality since 1 January 2019, and diesel Euro 5 and worse has been banned in the small environmental zone since 1 July 2020. Euro 6 diesel is untouched by either.
Where the inner line falls
The small zone covers the Talkessel, the bowl the city centre sits in, together with Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen. It is a compact area and a badly placed one for a Euro 5 diesel: the museums, the main station, the Schlossplatz and the festival grounds are all inside it. Driving the outer districts, the Filder plateau or the motorway corridor is unaffected.
The sticker is a separate obligation
The green Umweltplakette for pollutant group 4 still has to be displayed anywhere inside the Umweltzone, and a Euro 5 diesel qualifies for it — which is exactly why the sticker cannot be used to judge the inner ban. Order it from the official plakette portal before travelling; a missing sticker is a flat EUR 100 fine, enforced by police checks and cameras.
The exits the city has left open
Three through-routes are signed as exempt: Hafenbahnstrasse between the B10 and Oberturkheimer Strasse, the B10 and B27a between Korntal-Muenchingen and Kornwestheim, and Heerstrasse, Mittlere Filderstrasse and Neuhauser Strasse along the A8. Beyond those corridors, the general exemptions cover commercial deliveries, certain disabilities, medical emergencies, journeys to and from park-and-ride car parks, and two- and three-wheeled vehicles.
The practical answer for this car
Park at an outer park-and-ride — the journey to and from one is itself exempt — and take the S-Bahn into the basin. It costs a few euros, removes the inner-zone question entirely, and is considerably cheaper than discovering the boundary from a letter.
