London 2026: Euro 5 Diesel Drives In, at GBP 12.50 a Day

Checked against official sources 20 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-19

The ULEZ diesel standard is Euro 6, and a 2018 Euro 5 misses it by one generation. That does not close the city: London charges rather than bans, so the car may be driven anywhere inside the zone for GBP 12.50 a day. Pay by midnight on the third day after the journey, or it becomes a GBP 180 penalty charge notice — GBP 90 if settled within 14 days.

Metered, not refused

Every other zone on this site answers with a yes or a no at the boundary. London answers with a price. The cameras record the plate, the system knows the Euro class, and a non-compliant car accrues GBP 12.50 for the day — the same amount whether the journey was one mile in Croydon or a crossing of the whole capital. Since 29 August 2023 that reach has been all 32 boroughs plus the City of London; the M25 itself is outside, so a car can still ring the city for nothing.

What a trip actually costs

Days driving inside the zoneULEZ owed
OneGBP 12.50
A long weekend, three daysGBP 37.50
A working weekGBP 62.50

Days the car does not move are free. That is the lever worth using: park once, on arrival, and the meter stops — a Euro 5 diesel sitting outside a hotel for four days owes nothing for those four days.

The deadline people miss

Payment is due on the day, in advance, or up to midnight on the third day after travelling. Nothing is posted to remind you, and there is no invoice. Miss it and the charge is replaced by a GBP 180 penalty charge notice sent to the registered keeper, halved to GBP 90 if paid within 14 days of service.

Central London adds a second bill

Inside the small central zone the Congestion Charge runs alongside ULEZ and ignores emissions entirely: GBP 18 a day since 2 January 2026, Monday to Friday 07:00-18:00 and from midday at weekends. A Euro 5 diesel crossing the centre on a weekday therefore owes both charges, GBP 30.50 for that day, which is the arithmetic that usually decides people against driving in.

London checklist for this car

  • ✅ Check the plate on TfL’s free vehicle checker before travelling, not after
  • ✅ Budget GBP 12.50 for each day the car is driven, not each entry
  • ✅ Leave the car parked on days you do not need it — parked days cost nothing
  • ✅ Pay by midnight on the third day after each journey; nothing is invoiced
  • ✅ Add GBP 18 for any weekday that touches the central Congestion Charge zone
