Stuttgart 2026: Euro 5 Diesel In, but Not the Talkessel
Half the city, not all of it. A 2014 diesel Euro 5 clears Stuttgart’s city-wide ban, which refuses Euro 4 and older since 1 January 2019. It does not clear the kleine Umweltzone — the Talkessel plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen — where Euro 5 and older have been refused since 1 July 2020. The penalty either way is EUR 100, and a green badge does not override a ban.

The answer depends on the address
Stuttgart drew a second, tighter boundary inside the first, and a Euro 5 diesel sits exactly between them.
- Outside the inner zone, the governing rule is the city-wide ban on Euro 4 and older. This car is a class above it and may drive there.
- Inside the kleine Umweltzone — the central basin plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen — Euro 5 is refused along with everything older, since 1 July 2020.
The awkward part is what the inner zone contains: Schlossplatz, the museum quarter and the Christmas market all sit in the Talkessel. For most visitors the destination is precisely the area this car cannot reach.
A green badge does not buy an exemption
The Umweltplakette and the diesel bans are separate instruments. The green badge is required of every vehicle in the Umweltzone — EUR 5-15 from umwelt-plakette.de or a TÜV or DEKRA station — but it does not lift a ban. A Euro 5 diesel with a perfectly valid green sticker is still refused inside the inner zone.
What is left open
Three signed through-routes remain usable by banned diesels: Hafenbahnstraße between the B10 and Obertürkheimer Straße; Heerstraße, Mittlere Filderstraße and Neuhauser Straße along the A8; and the B10 and B27a between Korntal-Münchingen and Kornwestheim. These exist for crossing the city, not for reaching an address inside the restricted area.
The published exemptions cover commercial delivery traffic, people with certain disabilities, medical emergencies, journeys to and from park-and-ride car parks, and two- and three-wheeled motor vehicles. That fourth one is the useful one here.
The realistic plan for this car
Park at a P+R site outside the inner zone and finish on the S-Bahn — a journey the city itself lists as exempt. It costs a few euros and a short ride, against EUR 100 and a vehicle-based offence that cannot be talked out of at the kerb.
