Frankfurt 2026: Euro 5 Diesel Is a Class Over the Bar

Checked against official sources 19 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-18

Frankfurt’s Umweltzone admits diesel from Euro 4, so a 2014 Euro 5 qualifies with a class in hand. The zone covers only the area inside the A3/A5 ring; there, the green Umweltplakette must be on the glass, or it is a flat EUR 100.

The ring is the boundary, and the ring itself is outside

Frankfurt drew its zone around the A3 and A5 Autobahnen, which means the motorways you would use to pass the city are not in it. Everything inside — Sachsenhausen, the Hauptbahnhof district, Bornheim, the banking centre — is. A driver whose route never leaves the ring needs no badge at all; one who turns off for a hotel or a park-and-fly deal does.

What the Euro 5 rating buys you

Eligibility, and only that. The green badge (Schadstoffgruppe 4) covers diesel from Euro 4 upward, or Euro 3 with a particulate filter, and petrol with a regulated catalytic converter. Euro 5 is therefore a class clear of the bar — but Germany checks the sticker, not the certificate, so the badge still has to be bought.

Cost, validity and where it works

The Plakette runs EUR 5-15 depending on the issuing point, is registered against the vehicle papers, and lasts for the life of the vehicle. One badge covers every German Umweltzone, so a car travelling on to Berlin, Cologne or Stuttgart needs nothing further.

How Frankfurt checks

Visually. Police at the roadside and parking control on foot look for the badge, and the EUR 100 charge applies to a car parked inside the zone exactly as it does to one being driven. The penalty point that once accompanied the fine was abolished in 2014. The green requirement itself has applied since 1 January 2012, four years after the zone opened in October 2008.

Frankfurt checklist for a Euro 5 diesel

  • ✅ Euro 5 clears the Euro 4 diesel floor by a class — confirm it on the vehicle papers
  • ✅ Buy the green Plakette (EUR 5-15) before travelling; foreign plates are not exempt
  • ✅ Display it — eligibility without the badge is still a EUR 100 offence
  • ✅ Staying on the A3 or A5 past Frankfurt? Then no badge is needed at all
  • ✅ One badge covers every German zone, so buy it once for the whole trip
