Can a diesel Euro 5 car enter Budapest?

What the alert actually restricts

Municipal ordinance 69/2008 gives the Lord Mayor the power to declare a smog alert when pollution reaches the alert threshold. While it runs, cars carrying Hungarian environmental classification codes 0 to 4 may not move inside the city between 06:00 and 22:00. Electric vehicles, emergency vehicles, public transport and residents of the affected area continue as normal.

A Euro 5 badge answers a question the ordinance does not ask. The classification the restriction names is the Hungarian environmental code printed on the vehicle registration document, a national scale with its own numbering. Read that field, not the Euro standard, if you find yourself in the city on an alert day.

The practical answer is usually to leave the car where it is. Budapest’s metro, tram and trolleybus network covers the areas most visitors need, an alert is announced through city channels and Hungarian media, and the exposure for getting it wrong runs to HUF 100,000.
