Euro 5 Diesel in Stuttgart 2026: In, But Not Downtown
Only outside the middle. A 2010 diesel Euro 5 clears Stuttgart’s city-wide rules with a green Plakette — the city-wide ban, in force since 1 January 2019, starts at Euro 4 and worse. But since 1 July 2020 the kleine Umweltzone — the Talkessel plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen — refuses Euro 5 diesel as well, making Euro 6 the real minimum there. The fine is a flat EUR 100 (stuttgart.de).
Your case: This is a question of address, not just engine — put your destination and the Euro class from your registration document into the emission zone checker before you set off, because the two Stuttgart boundaries give opposite answers for the same car.

Can a diesel Euro 5 car enter Stuttgart?
Into the city, yes. Into the centre, no. Stuttgart runs two restrictions at once. The city-wide Diesel-Verkehrsverbot, in force since 1 January 2019, bans diesel cars of Euro 4 and worse everywhere in Stuttgart — a 2010 Euro 5 sits above that line. The smaller zonal ban added on 1 July 2020 covers the Talkessel plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen, and there Euro 5 diesel is refused too; only Euro 6 is untouched by either ban (stuttgart.de).
Read that against your itinerary: Schlossplatz, the Staatsgalerie, the Hauptbahnhof and the Mercedes and Porsche museum districts all sit inside the restricted area, so for most visitors this car is a Park and Ride car rather than a downtown car.
On top of the diesel rules, the ordinary green-sticker Umweltzone still applies: Stuttgart requires a green Umweltplakette on the windscreen. The sticker costs EUR 5-15 and can be ordered online before you travel.

What you still need to do
- Get Green Umweltplakette before you enter — enforcement does not accept “my car is compliant” as a defence without the sticker.
- Check your exact emission class on your vehicle’s Certificate of Conformity (CoC). Euro 5 on paper is what counts, not the model year.
- Display or register the sticker as required. Foreign-registered cars are not exempt.
If you can’t enter: what to do instead
- Park & Ride — and it is an exemption, not just a tactic. Journeys to and from a P+R car park are among Stuttgart’s listed exemptions from the diesel ban, so the drive to the car park is legal even where the destination would not be. A day of parking plus an S-Bahn ticket costs a fraction of the EUR 100 fine.
- Three signed through-routes. Hafenbahnstrasse between the B10 and Oberturkheimer Strasse; Heerstrasse, Mittlere Filderstrasse and Neuhauser Strasse along the A8; and the B10 and B27a between Korntal-Muenchingen and Kornwestheim stay open to banned diesels crossing the city.
- Hire a Euro 6 car. Stuttgart is the one German city where the difference between Euro 5 and Euro 6 decides whether you reach the centre at all.
How Stuttgart’s Umweltzone is enforced
The zone has been active since 2008 and is monitored by police spot checks + cameras, 24/7. Cameras read number plates automatically and cross-check them against the emission register, so there is no practical way to “slip through” unnoticed. Fines are issued per entry, not per day — entering twice can mean two penalties.
Quick compliance checklist for Stuttgart
- ✅ Confirm your Euro class on the CoC (not the model year) — Euro 5 and Euro 6 part company here
- ✅ Obtain the green Umweltplakette (EUR 5-15) before entering; it is separate from the diesel rules
- ✅ Check whether your destination is in the Talkessel, Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach or Zuffenhausen
- ✅ Both bans run 24/7, 365 days, and no day permit is sold
- ✅ EUR 100 per entry if you get it wrong — a P+R journey is an exemption, not a workaround
