Inside the line, by exactly one class

A 2018 registration says little here; the Euro class on the certificate of conformity says everything. Diesel, dual-fuel and mixed-fuel vehicles up to Euro 3 may not drive or park inside the Fascia Verde, which leaves Euro 4 as the lowest admitted diesel tier. Petrol, LPG and methane cars are barred up to Euro 2, two-wheelers up to Euro 1.

An annual ordinance, not a permanent law

This is the part that changes how a Euro 4 owner should read the rule. The ban is renewed by ordinance each autumn: the current one, number 145 of 30 October 2025, runs 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, Monday to Saturday around the clock, mid-week public holidays excluded. A car sitting one class above the cutoff is the obvious candidate for the next step, so treat the expiry date as a reminder to recheck rather than a formality.

The centre is a permit question, not an emissions one

Nothing about Euro 4 helps at the varchi. The ZTL Centro Storico runs Monday to Friday 06:30-18:00 and Saturday 14:00-18:00; Tridente Monday to Friday 06:30-19:00 and Saturday 10:00-19:00; the night zones in Trastevere and San Lorenzo Wednesday to Saturday 21:30-03:00, and Centro and Testaccio on Friday and Saturday nights 23:00-03:00. Inside those windows only authorised plates pass, and a hotel inside the zone registering your plate is the usual way a visitor becomes one.
