2018 Euro 4 Diesel: Paris Says No, No Fine Yet in 2026

Checked against official sources 19 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-18

No, if the Euro 4 rating is genuine. Euro 4 diesel is Crit’Air 3, and Greater Paris has banned Crit’Air 3, 4, 5 and unclassified vehicles inside the A86 since 1 January 2025. Cars are restricted Monday to Friday, 08:00-20:00, holidays excluded, with no fine issued before 31 December 2026. A 2018 diesel is far more likely to be Euro 6 — Crit’Air 2, and welcome.

R411-19-1 — not applied until 31 December 2026, while the metropolitan educational period runs and checks stay informational.

Can a diesel Euro 4 car enter Paris?

The Ville de Paris lists the excluded classes directly: “les véhicules catégorisés Crit’Air 5, Crit’Air 4, Crit’Air 3 et Non Classé ne peuvent pas rouler” (paris.fr, updated 30 December 2025). Diesel Euro 4 is Crit’Air 3 under the arrêté of 21 June 2016, so a car genuinely holding that rating may not drive in the zone during restricted hours.

The lowest admitted class is Crit’Air 2 — diesel Euro 5 or Euro 6, first registered from 1 January 2011.

Start by doubting the rating

Euro 6 has been compulsory for newly registered passenger cars since 1 September 2015. A 2018 diesel carrying a Euro 4 rating is therefore an outlier: it usually signals a vehicle imported from outside the EU, a re-registration of an older chassis, or simply a mistake in a database. Field V.9 of the Certificate of Conformity settles it in one line.

If that field says Euro 6 — or Euro 5 — the car is Crit’Air 2 and none of the restriction below applies to it.

Suspended, not lifted

Assume the Euro 4 rating is real. Driving into Paris on a weekday in 2026 breaks the rule, but the Métropole du Grand Paris has set an educational period to 31 December 2026 during which “aucune sanction ne sera appliquée” — checks happen, they inform, they do not fine.

From 2027 the penalty in article R411-19-1 of the code de la route applies: EUR 68 for cars, vans and motorcycles, EUR 135 for HGVs, buses and coaches, and no licence points. Anyone planning repeat trips should treat 2026 as notice rather than as an allowance.

The hours that still matter

For cars the restriction is Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 20:00, with public holidays excluded — so a Saturday arrival or a 21:00 crossing of the boundary is outside the rule entirely, whatever the class. Buses, coaches and lorries face the same hours seven days a week and get no weekend relief.

Crit’Air 3 owners also hold a 24-hour pass good for 24 days a year.
