Frankfurt 2026: Euro 4 Diesel Meets the Sticker Line

The green Umweltplakette group begins at diesel Euro 4, so this car qualifies — at the threshold, not above it. Inside the A3/A5 ring the badge must be displayed; the motorway ring itself is outside the zone, and a missing badge costs a flat EUR 100.

Read the key, not the plate

Because this car sits exactly on the threshold, the document decides everything. German zones are administered from the emission key in the registration papers: key groups in the green band get the badge, the rest do not. A 2018 registration tells you nothing useful on its own — the same model year covered several classes, and imported or re-registered cars are the ones most often misfiled.

Two outcomes the paperwork can produce

The zone is smaller than the city

Only the area inside the A3 and A5 counts: Sachsenhausen, the station district, Bornheim, the centre. Through-traffic on the ring motorways is unaffected, which is why a Frankfurt bypass needs no badge at all. The green requirement has applied here since 1 January 2012; the zone itself opened in October 2008.

What the badge costs and how it is checked

EUR 5-15, once, against the vehicle papers, valid for the vehicle’s life in every German Umweltzone. Checking is done by eye: police at the roadside, parking control on foot. The flat EUR 100 applies equally to a car left parked inside the zone, and the Flensburg point that used to accompany it was abolished in 2014.
