Vienna 2026: No Car Zone, So a Euro 4 Diesel Drives In

Vienna has no emission zone for passenger cars and never has had one; Austria issues no emission sticker either. The ban people run into when they search is the IG-L lorry rule, which stops goods vehicles of exhaust classes Euro 0, 1 and 2 — not cars of any class.

What the IG-L measure really covers

Under the IG-L measures catalogue of 2005, Vienna operates a permanent driving ban on lorries, articulated vehicles and tractor units in exhaust classes Euro 0, Euro 1 and Euro 2. It covers the entire municipal area, motorways included. The Euro 0 stage took effect in 2008, applying to vehicles first registered before 1 January 1992, and an amendment in December 2013 extended it upward to Euro 1 and Euro 2.

Exemptions are handled by MA 46 — for instance on proof of Euro 3 emission values, or for a works fleet of no more than four N1 or N2 lorries. The city publishes no penalty figure alongside the rule.

Why a 2014 Euro 4 diesel is unaffected

It is a passenger car. No Austrian city restricts passenger cars by Euro class, and there is no badge, register or day pass to obtain. The emission class on the certificate of conformity has no bearing on entering Vienna.

The restriction that will actually shape your day

Almost the whole inner city is a Kurzparkzone: paid short-term parking with a time cap for non-residents. A park-and-ride site on the U-Bahn is usually the better plan, not because the car is unwelcome in the city but because it has nowhere to stand once it arrives.
