2014 Euro 4 Diesel Is Crit'Air 3: Barred From Paris 2026
No — but check the paperwork first. A diesel certified to Euro 4 is Crit’Air 3, and Greater Paris has excluded Crit’Air 3, 4, 5 and unclassified vehicles from the whole area inside the A86 since 1 January 2025. The rule catches cars Monday to Friday, 08:00-20:00, holidays excluded, and no fine is issued before 31 December 2026. Most 2014 diesels are actually Euro 5, which would change the answer entirely.
Can your car enter Paris?
Enter your vehicle's fuel + Euro class → instant verdict for Paris (ZFE). Fine if wrong: EUR 68 (cars, motorcycles, light commercial) / EUR 135 (HGV, buses, coaches) under art. R411-19-1 — not applied until 31 December 2026, while the metropolitan educational period runs and checks stay informational.
Can a diesel Euro 4 car enter Paris?
Paris publishes the banned list without hedging: “les véhicules catégorisés Crit’Air 5, Crit’Air 4, Crit’Air 3 et Non Classé ne peuvent pas rouler” (paris.fr, updated 30 December 2025). Under the arrêté of 21 June 2016 a diesel Euro 4 is Crit’Air 3, so it is on that list.
The floor is Crit’Air 2: diesel Euro 5 or Euro 6, first registered from 1 January 2011. That is one class above this car as described.
Why a 2014 Euro 4 diesel is worth questioning
Euro 5 became mandatory for new passenger-car registrations in January 2011, and Euro 6 in September 2015. A genuinely Euro 4 diesel first registered in 2014 is therefore unusual — more typical of a re-registered import, a small-series vehicle or a records error than of a car bought new that year. If the Certificate of Conformity shows Euro 5, the car is Crit’Air 2 and drives into Paris legally.
Check that document before accepting the negative verdict. The gap between Euro 4 and Euro 5 here is the whole answer.
What happens if you drive in anyway
Between now and 31 December 2026, nothing financial. The Métropole runs an educational period during which “aucune sanction ne sera appliquée”; checks take place but they inform rather than penalise. The prohibition itself is fully in force — this is a suspended penalty, not a legal grey area.
From 2027 the written penalty applies: under article R411-19-1 of the code de la route, EUR 68 for a car, van or motorcycle, EUR 135 for an HGV, bus or coach, with no licence points either way.
When the zone does not apply to this car
The restriction on cars runs Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 20:00, “exceptés les jours fériés”. Weekends, evenings and public holidays are unrestricted whatever the Crit’Air class. Heavy vehicles get no such relief — for buses, coaches and lorries the same window applies seven days a week.
Crit’Air 3 vehicles also have a 24-hour pass usable on 24 days a year, which covers the occasional unavoidable weekday trip.
