Berlin 2026: 2014 Euro 4 Diesel Earns the Green Plakette

Checked against official sources 20 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-19

Berlin’s Umweltzone has required the green Umweltplakette since 1 January 2010, and a diesel qualifies from Euro 4 — where this 2014 car sits. The sticker costs EUR 5 at the registration authority or EUR 6 posted; entering the S-Bahn ring without one is EUR 100.

Can a diesel Euro 4 car enter Berlin?

Yes. A diesel Euro 4 vehicle registered in 2014 meets Berlin’s Umweltzone standard, which requires a minimum of Euro 4 for diesel vehicles. You are allowed to drive into the zone.

What the car still has to do is prove it at a glance. Berlin enforces on the windscreen: the green Plakette must be displayed, and a car that qualifies on paper but shows no sticker is treated as an offender. The Senate puts the cost of getting that wrong at a flat EUR 100, with no licence point since the Flensburg entry was dropped.

Buy it for EUR 5 at Berlin’s vehicle registration authority, or order it online for EUR 6 including postage from the official Plakette portal.

The boundary is the ring, with two deliberate holes

The zone is the 88 square kilometres inside the S-Bahn ring, roughly a tenth of Berlin’s area and home to more than a million of its residents. Two exclusions are built in on purpose: the southern city motorway with its slip roads, and the Elsenbrücke over the Spree. They exist so that a car without a sticker can still cross the city. Kanzowstraße in Prenzlauer Berg works the other way, lying outside the ring but inside the zone.

What to do before you drive in

  1. Order the sticker ahead of the trip if you are arriving from abroad — EUR 6 posted is cheaper than improvising on the day.
  2. Read the emission key off the registration document, which is what the seller needs, rather than relying on the model year.
  3. Fix it to the windscreen. The Plakette is a windscreen item and is not registered against the plate, so it has to be physically present.
