Berlin 2026: A 2010 Euro 4 Diesel Sits on the Floor
Euro 4 is the lowest diesel class the green Plakette reaches, so a 2010 car at that rating qualifies — exactly, with no margin. The badge itself costs EUR 5 in person or EUR 6 by post, and driving or parking inside the ring without it is EUR 100.

On the floor, not above it
Berlin’s Umweltzone has admitted only green-badge vehicles since 1 January 2010. For diesel the green group starts at Euro 4, which places this car on the threshold itself rather than comfortably past it. That has one practical consequence: the emission key in the registration document is worth reading before the trip, because 2009-2010 diesels were built in both Euro 4 and Euro 5 form and the badge is issued against the document, not the model name.
The Euro 3 escape route, if the paperwork disappoints
If the document turns out to say Euro 3, the car is not automatically shut out. A Euro 3 diesel with a particulate filter can be classified into the green group; without the filter there is no badge and no entry. This is the single most useful thing to know about German zones for anyone driving a car of this age.
What the badge is, and is not
It is a lifetime sticker tied to the vehicle, valid in every German Umweltzone, sold for EUR 5 at Berlin’s vehicle registration authority or EUR 6 online with postage. It is not a permit you can buy for a day, and there is no transit exemption for crossing the zone on the way somewhere else. Foreign plates are treated the same as German ones; only electric, hydrogen, H-plate historic, emergency and military vehicles are exempt.
Staying outside, if you would rather not bother
The southern city motorway with its slip roads and the Elsenbrücke are outside the boundary, so Berlin can be crossed without entering. Note the one oddity in the other direction: Kanzowstraße in Prenzlauer Berg counts as inside despite sitting beyond the S-Bahn ring.
Checklist before driving a Euro 4 diesel into Berlin
- ✅ Read the emission key in the registration document — Euro 4 is the exact floor
- ✅ If it reads Euro 3, check whether a particulate filter is fitted
- ✅ Buy the green Plakette: EUR 5 counter, EUR 6 posted, once per vehicle
- ✅ Display it; an eligible car without the badge still pays EUR 100
- ✅ Use the southern motorway or the Elsenbrücke if you only need to pass through
