Amsterdam 2026: Euro 3 Diesel Two Classes Under Class 5

Amsterdam’s Milieuzone screens diesel only, and since 1 January 2025 a diesel car has needed emission class 5 to be inside the whole Ring A10. A Euro 3 car is two classes short. Nothing is displayed — cameras read the plate — and the fine is EUR 130.

Can a diesel Euro 3 car enter Amsterdam?

No. Amsterdam’s Milieuzone sets its diesel floor at emission class 5 for passenger cars inside the whole Ring A10, and a 2018 diesel at Euro 3 falls two classes below it. The moment an ANPR camera logs the plate and the RDW register returns the class, the entry is an offence.

The bar moved recently, which is the part worth knowing: the traffic decision of 18 June 2024 raised the requirement from class 4 to class 5 with effect from 1 January 2025. A diesel that was admitted inside the A10 in 2024 can be refused today with nothing changed on the car itself.

What it costs, and who sets the figure

A refused vehicle costs EUR 130 if it is a car, van or bus, and EUR 320 if it is a lorry. These are nationally fixed Mulder tariffs rather than an Amsterdam charge, which is why the other Dutch milieuzone cities publish identical amounts. Each entry is logged separately, so repeat trips can mean repeat notices, and Dutch authorities trace foreign keepers through commercial address services — the EU cross-border system covers only eight road-safety offences and does not reach emission zones.

Which cars skip the rule entirely

Two groups are outside the diesel standard: electric vehicles, and petrol cars, which the milieuzone does not screen at any Euro class or age. That asymmetry catches people out — an old petrol car drives where this newer diesel cannot.

The geography, in one pass

• Inside the whole Ring A10: diesel passenger cars need class 5, diesel buses class 6.
• Between the A10 and the S100: diesel vans need class 5, diesel lorries class 6.
• Inside the S100: a zero-emission zone for vans and lorries, which does not change a private car’s position.
