Correct headlight use is both a safety practice and a legal requirement. In most European countries including Germany, France and the United Kingdom, dipped headlights must be used from sunset to sunrise and during any period of reduced visibility.

Dealing with Glare

Glare from oncoming headlights is a major discomfort and safety hazard during night driving. Modern LED and HID headlights are brighter than older halogen units and can cause significant temporary vision impairment when they hit your eyes directly.

To manage glare, look toward the left edge of the road or the white road markings rather than directly at oncoming lights. This allows your peripheral vision to track the oncoming vehicle while protecting your central vision from the worst of the glare. After the vehicle passes, your eyes will readjust more quickly.

Keep your windscreen scrupulously clean, both inside and outside. A dirty windscreen scatters light from oncoming headlights and multiplies the glare effect dramatically. Clean the inside of your windscreen regularly as a film of condensation residue builds up over time.

Use the anti-glare setting on your rear-view mirror when followed by a vehicle with bright headlights. Most mirrors have a manual flip lever while some modern vehicles feature auto-dimming mirrors that adjust automatically.

Wildlife and Pedestrian Hazards

Animals are a significant night driving hazard, particularly in rural areas. Deer, wild boar, foxes and other animals are most active at dawn and dusk and their eyes may be the only visible indicator of their presence at the roadside. In Scandinavia and parts of central Europe, moose and elk collisions can be fatal for vehicle occupants.

Watch for eye shine at the roadside, which appears as bright reflective dots. If you see eye shine, reduce speed immediately because the animal behaviour is unpredictable. Use your horn to encourage the animal to move if it is in the road. If a collision is unavoidable, brake firmly but do not swerve violently as losing control of the vehicle is often more dangerous than the impact itself.

Pedestrians are also harder to see at night, particularly those wearing dark clothing. Extra caution is needed near bus stops, residential areas, pubs and entertainment venues where pedestrians may enter the road unexpectedly.

Vehicle Preparation for Night Driving

Before driving at night, prepare your vehicle to maximise safety. Ensure all lights are working including headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators and number plate lights. Clean all light lenses and the windscreen. Check that windscreen washer fluid is full and wipers are in good condition.
