Drive in Zimbabwe on a UK Licence 2026: Left Side, 12 Months
United Kingdom
Zimbabwe
Yes. The UK government says you can drive in Zimbabwe on a UK licence for up to 12 months. Zimbabwe also drives on the left, so there is no side switch to relearn.
Zimbabwe is one of the easier African self-drive destinations for British visitors on paper, and the one thing you will notice the moment you pull away is that nothing is mirrored.
Can you drive on a British licence?
Yes. The UK Foreign Office says you can drive in Zimbabwe with a UK driving licence for up to 12 months. Police roadblocks are a routine feature of Zimbabwean roads, so keep the photocard and your passport where you can reach them. An International Driving Permit is not listed as a requirement; some drivers carry one to make roadside checks and rental desks quicker, and it can only be bought in the UK before you go. If you are bringing a vehicle registered outside Zimbabwe, you need a police vehicle clearance certificate (temporary import permit). The Driving Permit Checker covers other routes.
The rare bit of good news: no side switch
Zimbabwe drives on the left — exactly like the UK. Roundabouts turn the way you expect, the driver sits on the right, and your overtaking instincts are correct. That frees your attention for what the Foreign Office warns about: a poor standard of driving, deep potholes, broken traffic lights, vehicles and cyclists without lights, badly marked roads, stray livestock and pedestrians. Avoid driving outside main towns at night, and pull over and stop when the President’s motorcade passes, whichever side of the road you are on.
Speeds, alcohol and emergencies
The national limits are 60 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, the same figure as in England and Wales, but long rural distances and animals on the road after dark make a zero-alcohol policy the sensible call. For emergencies dial 112 from an Econet mobile or 114 from NetOne; emergency response is limited outside the cities. Full detail is on our Zimbabwe driving guide.
