Zambia on a US Licence — You Switch to the Left, IDP Recommended
United States
Zambia
Yes — an American licence holder can drive in Zambia with an International Driving Permit recommended, but the one thing that genuinely catches US drivers is the side switch: Zambia drives on the left. Add rough rural roads and frequent police checks and the IDP becomes well worth carrying.
Zambia is one of the destinations where an American driver cannot just transfer instinct from home, because the most fundamental thing changes: Zambia drives on the left. That single fact is the heart of the trip, so plan your first day around it rather than around the paperwork.
The biggest adjustment: switching to the left
The United States drives on the right; Zambia drives on the left. The driver’s seat moves to the right of the car, roundabouts flow clockwise, and the dangerous moments are the reflexive ones — pulling out of a fuel station, glancing the wrong way at a junction, or drifting right after a turn. Give yourself a slow first hour somewhere quiet, well away from Lusaka traffic, and stay deliberate at every turn until the new pattern stops feeling backwards. Most US drivers adapt within a day, but the early errors are exactly where the risk sits.
Can you drive on a US licence? Yes — carry an IDP
An American licence holder can drive in Zambia as a tourist on a US licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. Police checkpoints are a routine feature of Zambian roads, and an IDP — which carries a recognised translation of your licence — makes those stops simpler and quicker. Carry the IDP with your US licence and passport, and arrange it in the US before you travel, since it is not issued in Zambia.
Roads and limits
Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and 100 on the main highways, but the number on the sign is rarely the real constraint. Away from the principal routes, surfaces are rough, potholes appear without warning, livestock and pedestrians share the road, and after dark unlit vehicles are a genuine hazard. Drive to the condition of the road, not the limit, and avoid long rural drives at night.
The drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC, the same headline figure as much of the US — but combined with unfamiliar left-side driving and variable roads, the only safe choice is none before driving.
Before you collect the car
Fuel runs around $1.18 a litre, and the emergency number is 112. Mobile coverage and fuel both thin out between towns, so carry offline maps and a full tank on longer legs.
Read the country rules on the Zambia driving guide and confirm your paperwork with the Driving Permit Checker before you go — with checkpoints common, you want the IDP sorted in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. American visitors can drive in Zambia on their US licence for a tourist stay, and an International Driving Permit is recommended alongside it — police checkpoints are common and an IDP, which provides a recognised translation, smooths them. Carry your US licence, the IDP and your passport.
Zambia drives on the left, the opposite of the United States. For American drivers this is the single biggest adjustment — the seating is on the right, you give way the other way at roundabouts, and your instinct at junctions will initially be wrong.
Limits run to about 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on the main highways. The bigger issue is surface quality off the main routes, where potholes and unlit hazards matter more than the posted number.
