Zambia's 90-Day Rule for UK Licences in 2026, Then an IDP
United Kingdom
Zambia
Yes. GOV.UK says a UK photocard licence covers driving in Zambia for up to 90 days; longer stays need an IDP or a Zambian licence. Zambia keeps left, so potholes, not the side, are the risk.
If you’re British and wondering whether you can drive in Zambia, the basics translate almost directly from home. The hazards lie on the road itself.
The verdict for British licence holders
UK travel advice says you can use a UK photocard driving licence in Zambia for up to 90 days, with no permit needed for a normal trip. Staying longer, you need the correct version of the International Driving Permit or a Zambian licence. Carry your passport and rental papers with the licence: Canada’s advice notes that police checkpoints are common, particularly outside cities, and that only national police may set them up. If you are fined, ask for a written ticket you can pay later, or go to the nearest police station.
No side switch
Zambia drives on the left, like the UK, so roundabouts, junctions and overtaking run the way your instincts expect. One local rule to learn: turning left at a red light is prohibited.
The vehicle and the road
Canada says vehicles must carry two metallic warning triangles plus white reflector stickers on the front and red on the back, with heavy fines for missing them, so check the hire car before you leave the depot.
The UK warns that many roads are severely potholed and that floods in the rainy season, November to April, can wash away bridges and roads. Vehicles are often poorly maintained and badly driven, fatal crashes are frequent, and drink-driving is illegal but common. Driving outside the main towns after dark is dangerous because of abandoned vehicles, pedestrians, stray animals and cars without lights, so finish long legs before sunset and fill up whenever you can.
Emergency numbers
There is no single national number outside Lusaka. In Lusaka, Canada lists 991 for police, 991 or 995 for medical help and 993 for fire; elsewhere, note local contacts before you set off. The Zambia driving guide has the wider rules, and the guide to driving fines abroad and who pays explains how penalties follow you.

Yes. Zambia drives on the left, the same as the United Kingdom, so junctions and roundabouts work the way your instincts expect. One local rule differs: turning left at a red light is prohibited.
Road condition and darkness, not the rulebook. Many roads are severely potholed, rainy-season floods can wash away roads and bridges, and the UK says it is dangerous to drive outside the main towns after dark.
