You can. Zambia accepts a foreign licence for visitors, and the document to carry alongside your Indian licence is an International Driving Permit (IDP). The alcohol limit runs looser, not stricter

Here is the one to keep in mind. Zambia’s drink-drive limit is 0.08, looser than India’s 0.03. Counter-intuitively, the higher number is a trap — it invites a relaxed “one drink is fine” judgement on roads that demand full attention. Treat driving and drinking as separate; rural roads, animals and the occasional unlit vehicle after dark leave no margin for slowed reactions.

Distances, road conditions and the basics

Speed limits run to 50 km/h in towns, 80 on rural roads and up to 100 km/h on the main highways. The bigger issue is condition and distance: away from the main routes, surfaces can be rough, fuel stops are spread far apart, and journeys to the parks are long, so plan fuel, water and daylight rather than driving the remote stretches at night. The emergency number is 112 and fuel runs around $1.18/litre.
