Can an American Drive in Vanuatu? — IDP Recommended, You Stay on the Right
United States
Vanuatu
An American licence holder can drive in Vanuatu with an International Driving Permit carried alongside it. The reassuring part: Vanuatu drives on the right, the same as the United States, so there is no side switch — but speeds are low (top limit around 80 km/h) and roads outside Port Vila are basic, so a 4x4 and daylight driving make sense.
Vanuatu is a scattering of islands where a hire car or a 4x4 is the only practical way to reach the volcanoes, beaches and villages beyond the main town. For an American driver the good news starts with something most Pacific destinations do not offer.
The verdict for American licence holders
Carry an International Driving Permit alongside your US licence for Vanuatu. The IDP is the recognised translation document, and rental companies and police expect to see it with your passport. Sort it through AAA before you fly — there is no way to obtain one once you arrive. The Driving Permit Checker confirms what to carry.
The pleasant surprise: you stay on the right
Most islands in this part of the Pacific drive on the left, a legacy of British and Australian influence — but Vanuatu drives on the right, the same as the United States. For an American that removes the biggest hazard of driving abroad: there is no reversed roundabout, no wrong-side reflex to fight. The driving feels immediately familiar in that respect, which is rare for the region.
Low speeds and basic roads
The top speed limit is around 80 km/h, with 50 in town and 70 on rural roads — modest numbers that reflect the reality of the road network. Around Port Vila the sealed roads are fine, but venture further on Efate or to the outer islands and surfaces turn to gravel and dirt, narrow and rough, with potholes after rain. A 4x4 is worth the money, journeys take longer than the map suggests, and driving in daylight is wise because rural roads are unlit and you will meet pedestrians and animals. Check posted limits with the Speed Limit Map where they exist.
Before you set off
The drink-drive limit is 0.08, in line with most US states, but unlit roads make zero the sensible policy after dark. The emergency number is 112. Read the full Vanuatu driving guide before you collect the car, and re-check the rule for any onward island with the Driving Permit Checker.

On the right, the same as the United States — so there is no side switch to relearn. That is unusual for a Pacific island nation and makes Vanuatu an easy place for an American to drive.
