Can an American Drive in Uruguay? — Yes, but the Limit Is Zero Alcohol
United States
Uruguay
Yes. The State Department says you may drive in Uruguay on your foreign licence, so no IDP is needed. Traffic keeps right; the rule that catches US visitors is a 0.0 alcohol limit.
Uruguay is one of South America’s easiest countries to drive in — calm traffic, good main roads and a coastline made for a road trip from Montevideo to Punta del Este. For an American driver the paperwork is straightforward, but there is one rule that trips people up, and it has nothing to do with the licence.
Can an American licence holder drive in Uruguay?
Yes. The U.S. State Department says “you may drive using your foreign driver’s license in Uruguay,” so your US licence is enough and no International Driving Permit is needed. Headlights must be on day and night, and the car must carry the road safety kit Uruguayan law requires; rental cars should already have one. The Driving Permit Checker covers the rest of your route.
The side is familiar — the alcohol limit is not
Uruguay drives on the right, exactly like home, so there’s no mirror-image adjustment. The rule to internalise instead is the 0.0 blood-alcohol limit. This is a true zero — not the 0.05 some countries use as a soft threshold and not the 0.08 standard across most US states. A single drink can put you over, breath testing is routine, and the penalties are serious. The simplest approach is to keep alcohol and driving completely separate for the whole trip.
Speeds and roads
Limits step down clearly: 110 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on rural routes and a low 45 km/h in towns, so ease off as you enter built-up areas. Main highways are well surfaced, but rural roads can narrow quickly and stray livestock is a real hazard at dusk. Fuel is on the expensive side at roughly $1.78 a litre, so factor that into a longer itinerary. The general emergency number is 911.
