Uruguay on an Indian Licence — IDP, the Side Switch & a Zero Alcohol Limit

Uruguay is a calm, rewarding place to drive — the coast road to Punta del Este, the wine country, the long flat interior — and for an Indian traveller the licence question is the simple part. Two specific things shape the trip.

First the verdict: you can drive in Uruguay on your Indian licence, and an International Driving Permit is recommended. It is the translation rental desks and roadside police expect, so carry it with your licence and passport, and sort it in India before you travel — there is no Indian-issued IDP available once you land.

The first thing to plan for is the side switch. India drives on the left; Uruguay drives on the right, so everything is mirrored. The risky window is your first day — joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, glancing the wrong direction at a junction, a reflex pull onto the wrong side leaving a petrol station. Take that first hour on quiet roads, not in central Montevideo, and stay deliberate at every turn until right-hand traffic stops feeling backwards.

The second is the one that genuinely surprises Indian drivers: Uruguay runs a true 0.0 blood-alcohol limit. That is zero — stricter than India’s 0.03 and stricter than most of the world. There is no “one beer with dinner” allowance; if you are going to drive, you do not drink at all. Enforcement is taken seriously, and the policy is well known locally, so treat it as absolute.

On the rest, the numbers are gentle: towns are a low 45 km/h, rural roads 90 and the limited motorways 110, so the pace is relaxed and the roads are generally in fair condition. Fuel is on the expensive side at around $1.78/litre, so factor that into a longer trip. The emergency number is 911.
