Quick Answer

China's mainland licence is not in English, so an IDP is the practical necessity for Chinese drivers in the USA — many rental firms and states will not accept the licence alone. You keep the right-hand side, but speeds are in mph, rules change state to state, and right-turn-on-red is legal.

For Chinese drivers, the most important fact about driving in America has nothing to do with speed limits or which side of the road to use. It is the licence. A mainland Chinese driving licence is printed in Chinese, and most US states and rental companies will not accept it on its own — they need an English-language International Driving Permit that translates and validates it. Arrange the IDP in China before you travel; you cannot obtain one once you arrive, and without it your rental may be refused at the desk. Confirm the requirement with the Driving Permit Checker and carry the IDP, your licence and your passport together.

The good news is that the road itself feels familiar. Both China and the US drive on the right, so there is no side switch — the wheel and traffic flow are where your instincts expect. What changes is the framework around it.

American traffic law is set state by state, so rules differ between, say, California and Florida — speed limits, phone use, turning rules. Two habits surprise visitors most. The right turn on red is legal in most states after a full stop unless a sign forbids it. And the four-way stop runs on order of arrival and courtesy rather than signals — first to stop, first to go.

Speeds are posted in miles per hour and run slower than China’s expressways: about 25 mph (40 km/h) in towns, 55 mph (88 km/h) on rural roads and 65 mph (104 km/h) on interstates, against the 120 km/h you know at home. Police enforce actively, and a ticket costs USD 50-200 depending on the state. Check yours with the Speeding Fine Calculator.

The drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC, far looser than China’s near-zero 0.02 — but do not be misled. US DUI penalties are heavy, and the safe rule remains nothing before driving. Distances between towns are huge, so plan fuel and rest stops; at roughly $0.95 a litre, fuel is at least cheap.

The emergency number is 911. Read our full United States driving guide for the state-by-state detail before you set off.

Frequently Asked Questions

In practice you need an IDP as an English translation alongside it. Mainland Chinese licences are not in English, and many states and rental companies will not accept the licence on its own. Carry both with your passport.

Check if your licence is valid

Yes — both drive on the right, so there is no side switch. The adjustments are mph speed limits, four-way stops and the legal right turn on a red light.

0.08 BAC — looser than China's strict 0.02 — but DUI penalties are severe and enforcement aggressive. Treat zero alcohol as the only safe rule before driving.
