The USA for Brazilian Drivers — Where State Lines Change the Rules
Brazil
United States
There is no single set of US driving rules — each state writes its own, so speed limits, IDP requirements and right-turn-on-red all change at the state line. Carry a 1968 IDP with your Brazilian licence. And note the alcohol limit is 0.08, looser than Brazil's near-zero Lei Seca, not stricter.
The mistake Brazilian drivers make about the United States is treating it as one country with one rulebook. It is fifty, and driving law is written state by state. Cross from one to the next and the speed limit, the paperwork the police want, even whether you can turn right on red can all change without any announcement. That is the single thing to plan around, because the rest — wide roads, automatic cars, driving on the right as at home — is genuinely easy.
Take the licence. Some states wave a foreign licence through for a short visit; others want a 1968 International Driving Permit alongside it. Rather than research each state on your route, simply carry the IDP with your Brazilian licence and passport and you are covered everywhere. Right-turn-on-red is the classic trap: legal after a full stop in most states, banned in others and in many city centres, so do it only where a sign confirms it. Speed limits jump around too — interstates commonly run 65–75 mph (about 104–120 km/h) but vary by state and stretch.
On alcohol, correct your instinct before you go. You might expect the US to be tougher than home; it is the opposite. The federal limit is 0.08, well above Brazil’s near-zero Lei Seca. That is not a licence to drink and drive — DUI penalties are harsh and a stop escalates fast — but the rule is looser than you may assume, so the only safe policy is none.
Fines for speeding are set locally and run from roughly USD 50 to USD 200 depending on the state and the overage. Fuel is cheap by Brazilian standards at around USD 0.95 a litre — budget a long road trip with our Fuel Cost Calculator. Your Brazilian licence is generally good for up to three months; confirm the IDP position with our Driving Permit Checker, and read the state-by-state notes on our United States driving guide. The emergency number everywhere is 911.

Frequently Asked Questions
It varies by state. Many accept a foreign licence for short visits, but some require a 1968 IDP, so carry one with your Brazilian licence to be safe everywhere you drive.
In most states yes, after a full stop and if no sign forbids it — but not everywhere, and not in some cities. Treat it as allowed only where local signs confirm it.
No. The US sets 0.08 BAC, looser than Brazil's near-zero Lei Seca. Do not assume more freedom, though — penalties are severe and a stop quickly escalates.
