Can a Swedish Driver Drive in the UK? — No IDP Needed, but You Switch to the Left

For a Swedish visitor, the UK is one of the easiest countries in Europe to drive in on paper — the catch is not the licence, it’s the side of the road. Here is the verdict, then the two things that genuinely matter.

A Swedish licence holder can drive in the UK with no International Driving Permit needed. Your Swedish licence is recognised on its own for the length of a normal visit, so there is no extra paperwork — just carry your licence and passport. That makes the UK simpler than many non-EU destinations where an IDP is expected.

The real adjustment is direction. The UK drives on the left, the opposite of Sweden, and the habit catches you out exactly where you stop thinking about it — entering a roundabout, pulling out of a junction, or that instinctive glance the wrong way. Spend your first ten minutes in a quiet car park getting the indicator-and-wipers swap and the mirror positions sorted before you join real traffic.

The counter-intuitive one is alcohol. Coming from Sweden you may assume the limit tightens; in fact England and Wales run a much higher 0.08, against Sweden’s strict 0.02. That does not make drinking and driving sensible — it means a reading that would cost you your licence at home is technically legal here, so simply keep to your own standard and you will never come close.

Speeds in metric terms are roughly 48 km/h (30 mph) in towns, 96 km/h (60 mph) on rural single carriageways and 112 km/h (70 mph) on motorways. Speed cameras, both fixed and average-speed, are widespread, and a basic speeding penalty is £100 plus 3 points. The emergency number is 999 (112 also works).
