Quick Answer

South Korea drives on the right, Britain on the left — that switch is the main thing South Korean drivers must master, hardest in the first hours at junctions and roundabouts. Carry an IDP with your Korean licence, read speeds in mph, and note the alcohol limit loosens from 0.03 to 0.08.

The one thing South Korean drivers have to get right in Britain is the side of the road. South Korea drives on the right; the UK drives on the left, and that reversal is what catches out almost every visitor used to right-hand traffic. The steering wheel sits on the right, you change gear with your left hand, and your instincts will betray you at the worst moments — pulling out of a petrol station, joining a roundabout, checking for traffic at a junction. Take your first hour on quiet roads, not in city traffic, and stay consciously deliberate until left-hand driving stops feeling reversed.

The paperwork is manageable. Your South Korean licence is valid for stays of up to 12 months. An International Driving Permit is not strictly required by law, but rental companies and police expect to see one as a recognised translation — arrange it at home and carry it with your licence and passport. Confirm what your trip needs with the Driving Permit Checker.

Roundabouts are the next hurdle. Britain has them everywhere, often two or three lanes wide, and they flow clockwise — the opposite of what your eyes expect. Give way to traffic from the right, pick your exit before entering, signal early and hold your lane. Narrow rural lanes with passing places are the other surprise; these single-track roads are slower and tighter than Korean expressways.

Speed limits are posted in miles per hour: 30 mph (48 km/h) in towns, 60 mph (96 km/h) on rural roads, 70 mph (112 km/h) on motorways — broadly similar to Korea’s pace once you do the conversion. The catch is enforcement. Fixed, average-speed and mobile cameras cover the network, and 10 mph over the limit costs a GBP 100 fine plus 3 penalty points. Estimate any penalty with the Speeding Fine Calculator.

The drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC in England, Wales and Northern Ireland — looser than Korea’s 0.03 — but Scotland tightens to 0.05, so the rule shifts across the border. The safe approach anywhere in the UK is nothing before driving.

Fuel is roughly $1.85 a litre, cheapest at supermarket forecourts, and the emergency number is 999 (112 also works). For the complete rules, read our United Kingdom driving guide before you collect the car.

Yes, for up to 12 months. An IDP is not legally mandatory but rental desks and police expect it as a translation of your Korean licence, so carry both with your passport.
