Quick Answer

Indian drivers get the rarest advantage in Europe — Britain drives on the LEFT, exactly like India, so there is no side switch to relearn. Carry an IDP alongside your Indian licence (rental desks expect it), watch the multi-lane roundabouts, and remember the alcohol limit jumps to a looser 0.08.

Most visitors to Britain spend their first day fighting the urge to drive on the wrong side. Indian drivers do not — and that single fact changes the whole trip. India and the UK both keep to the left, so the steering wheel is on the familiar right, the gearstick falls under your left hand, and your road instincts already point the correct way. You arrive with the hardest lesson already learned.

The paperwork is light. Your Indian licence is valid for stays of up to 12 months, which covers any holiday. An International Driving Permit is not strictly demanded by law, but rental companies and traffic police expect it as a clean translation of your licence — sort one at home and carry it with your licence and passport. You can confirm exactly what your trip needs with the Driving Permit Checker.

So what actually catches Indian drivers out? Roundabouts. Britain runs on them, often two or three lanes wide with lane-discipline painted on the tarmac and a “give way to the right” rule that punishes hesitation. Pick your exit before you enter, signal early, and stay in your lane. Rural lanes are the second surprise — single-track roads with passing places, blind bends and hedgerows that hide oncoming cars. These feel nothing like an Indian highway, and patience matters more than speed.

Speed limits come in miles per hour, not km/h: 30 mph (48 km/h) in towns, 60 mph (96 km/h) on rural roads and 70 mph (112 km/h) on motorways. Cameras are everywhere — fixed, average-speed and mobile — and the system is unforgiving. Drift 10 mph over and you are looking at a GBP 100 fine plus 3 penalty points as the starting band. Estimate any penalty with the Speeding Fine Calculator.

The drink-drive limit is one place Britain is looser than home: 0.08 BAC in England, Wales and Northern Ireland against India’s 0.03 — but cross into Scotland and it tightens to 0.05, so do not assume a uniform rule. The safe move on any UK trip is nothing before driving.

Fuel runs around $1.85 a litre; supermarket forecourts are cheapest. The emergency number is 999 (112 also works). For the full rulebook, see our United Kingdom driving guide before you collect the keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. An Indian licence is valid in the UK for up to 12 months. An IDP is not legally required but rental desks and police prefer to see one, so carry it with your Indian licence and passport.

Check if your licence is valid

Yes — both drive on the left. This is unusual for Europe and means Indian drivers skip the hardest adjustment most visitors face. The real challenge is roundabout etiquette and narrow rural lanes.

0.08 BAC in England, Wales and Northern Ireland — looser than India's 0.03 — but Scotland is stricter at 0.05. Going 10 mph over a limit starts at a GBP 100 fine plus 3 penalty points.
