UK on a Canadian Licence — The Left-Hand Switch Is the Whole Challenge

The paperwork for a Canadian driving in Britain is refreshingly light — your Canadian licence is valid for visits of up to 12 months and you do not need an International Driving Permit. That makes the UK one of the simplest places for a Canadian to rent a car, which means all your attention can go to the one thing that genuinely matters: which side of the road you are on.

Canada drives on the right; the UK drives on the left. This is not a detail — it reshapes every junction, every roundabout (they flow clockwise here) and every instinctive glance. The danger window is your first hour, and the classic mistakes are turning into the wrong lane after a quiet junction, drifting left and clipping the kerb, or looking the wrong way before pulling out. Pick up the car somewhere quiet, not at Heathrow into central London, and say “left, left” to yourself for the first day. Once the side switch settles, the rest is manageable. Limits read in miles per hour, not km/h: 30 mph (48 km/h) in towns, 60 (96) on rural roads and 70 (112) on motorways — slightly faster than Canadian highways. The alcohol limit is 0.08 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland — the same as most of Canada — but Scotland drops to 0.05, so if your trip crosses the border, treat it as zero.
