The UK on a Brazilian Licence — the Left-Side Switch & Roundabout Country

For a Brazilian driver the UK flips the one thing you never think about — which side of the road you belong on — and then surrounds you with roundabouts. Get those two right and the rest is straightforward, well-signed driving.

The left-hand switch is the whole challenge

Brazil drives on the right; the UK drives on the left. Everything reverses: you sit on the right of the car, change gear with your left hand, and your mirror and overtaking instincts are all backwards for the first day. The classic mistake is the reflex glance the wrong way when pulling out. Collect the car somewhere quiet, not central London, and stay deliberate until left stops feeling like a mistake.

Roundabouts, taken the other way

Britain runs on roundabouts, and here you go clockwise, giving way to traffic from your right. Mini-roundabouts, multi-lane gyratories and “magic” roundabouts all appear, often in quick succession. Get in the correct lane early, signal your exit, and when in doubt take the next loop rather than cut across. Speed limits read in mph on signs but work out to roughly 48 km/h in towns, 96 on rural roads and 112 on motorways.

A looser limit, but don’t drop your guard

Here is the reversal Brazilians notice: the UK allows 0.08 BAC in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, far more relaxed than Brazil’s enforced zero tolerance — though Scotland is stricter at 0.05.
