Quick Answer

A British licence holder can drive in the UAE only with an International Driving Permit (IDP) carried alongside the home licence — rental desks insist on it. Two changes catch British drivers hardest: the UK drives on the left and the UAE on the right, so you switch sides, and the alcohol limit drops from 0.08 to an absolute zero.

British drivers head to the United Arab Emirates in large numbers, and the roads themselves rarely intimidate — they are wide, fast and well-maintained. The trouble for a UK visitor is that two deep habits have to be unlearned at once: which side of the road you sit on, and how much you can drink before driving. Neither is the licence, but both matter more than the paperwork.

Can a British licence holder drive in the UAE?

Yes, on your British licence — but an International Driving Permit is required to accompany it. The two documents are checked together at the rental desk, and counters in Dubai and Abu Dhabi will not release a car on the UK photocard alone. Apply for the IDP at a Post Office before you fly, as it cannot be obtained in the Emirates, and expect your home licence to cover a tourist stay of around six months.

The side switch is the main event

The UK drives on the left; the UAE drives on the right. This is the single largest adjustment for a British driver, and the danger window is the first day — joining a multi-lane interchange, pulling out of a car park, or glancing the wrong way at a junction on reflex. Take your opening half hour on quieter roads rather than going straight onto Sheikh Zayed Road, and talk yourself through each turn until right-side driving feels natural.

Zero alcohol, and cameras everywhere

The UK’s 0.08 limit (lower in Scotland) does not travel. The UAE limit is 0.0 — an outright zero, no margin at all. If you are driving, you do not drink, and the consequences for ignoring that are severe rather than a fine and points. Speed enforcement is the other constant: the limits are 60 urban, 100 rural and 120 on motorways, but fixed and average-speed cameras are relentless and a routine 10 km/h-over penalty starts at about AED 300 (≈ EUR 75).

Confirm your paperwork with the Driving Permit Checker, read the full UAE driving guide, and estimate a penalty with the Speeding Fine Calculator. The emergency number throughout the Emirates is 999.

Check if your licence is valid

No. The UAE drives on the right, so British visitors face a side switch — the single biggest adjustment of the trip, especially in the first few hours.

The UK allows 0.08 (lower in Scotland), but the UAE enforces an absolute 0.0 — no alcohol at all before driving, with severe penalties.
