Yes. GOV.UK says you can drive in the UAE on a UK photocard licence; only an old paper licence may need an IDP. Drinking any alcohol before driving is illegal, and traffic keeps right.
British drivers visit the UAE in large numbers, and the roads rarely intimidate: they are wide, fast and well maintained. What catches UK visitors is unlearning two habits at once. The licence is not the problem.
Your UK licence
GOV.UK says plainly: “You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in the UAE.” No international driving permit is needed with a photocard. The exception is an old paper licence. GOV.UK says you may need to update it to a photocard or get the correct IDP as well, and its permit table lists the 1968 version for the UAE. Hire companies can set their own conditions, so check the rental terms before you book. If you apply for UAE residence, GOV.UK says you can use your UK licence until the residence permit is issued, and then you will need a UAE licence.
Changing sides
The UK drives on the left, while the UAE drives on the right. The first day is the riskiest: multi-lane interchanges, car-park exits and a reflex glance the wrong way. Spend your first half-hour on quieter roads before joining Sheikh Zayed Road.
Zero alcohol and strict policing
GOV.UK says “it is illegal to drink and drive, no matter how small the amount”, and your insurance is likely to be invalid after a crash. Speed cameras are widespread. Police can impound a car for violations that would be minor in the UK, and release costs AED 50,000 plus the traffic fine. Offensive gestures or bad language at other drivers can lead to fines, prison and possible deportation. Flashing headlights usually mean a driver is coming through, not giving way. After any incident, all drivers involved must stop as soon as it is safe.
