Can a South Korean Drive in the UAE? — Yes, with an IDP and Zero Alcohol

South Korean travellers tend to find the United Arab Emirates an unusually comfortable place to drive: the roads are wide and well-signed, and crucially the country drives on the right — the same as home — so there is no disorientating side switch to manage. What you do need to get right is the paperwork and two rules that are stricter than Korean equivalents.

The licence verdict

You can drive in the UAE on your South Korean licence, but an International Driving Permit is required to go with it. The two documents travel together: rental desks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi will ask for both, and a car will not be released on the national licence alone. Arrange the IDP in Korea before you fly — it cannot be issued in the Emirates — and expect your home licence to cover a tourist stay of around six months.

Speeds feel familiar, the cameras do not

The numbers will look ordinary to a Korean driver — 60 km/h in town, 100 rural, 120 on motorways — only slightly above the 110 km/h motorway norm at home. The difference is enforcement intensity. Fixed and average-speed cameras line the major highways, and a standard penalty for 10 km/h over begins at roughly AED 300 (≈ EUR 75). Set a steady cruise on the open motorway and you will rarely have a problem; rely on judging the traffic and you will collect tickets.

The non-negotiable: a 0.0 alcohol limit

The drink-drive limit in the UAE is 0.0 — a true zero, lower than South Korea’s 0.03, with no tolerance at all. There is no social-drinking margin to work with; if you are going to drive, do not drink anything. The consequences in the Emirates are far more serious than a fine and should be treated accordingly.
