UAE on a Polish Licence — IDP Required, Zero Alcohol, Same Side of the Road

For a Polish driver, the United Arab Emirates is one of the easier places to adapt to behind the wheel — traffic flows on the right exactly as it does at home, so there is no side switch to relearn. The friction is elsewhere: the paperwork and a couple of rules that are stricter than anything in Poland.

Can a Polish licence holder drive in the UAE?

Yes — but with a condition. Your Polish licence alone is not enough at the rental counter; an International Driving Permit is required, and you must carry it together with your national licence. Desks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi check for both as a matter of routine. Sort the IDP in Poland before you leave, because you cannot get one in the Emirates. Your home licence is good for tourist stays of around six months.

What actually changes for a Polish driver

Two things, and neither is the side of the road. First, speed. UAE motorways top out at 120 km/h — lower than the 140 you may run on a Polish motorway — with 100 on rural roads and 60 in town. Resist the instinct to drive to Polish speeds, because the second difference is enforcement: fixed and average-speed cameras saturate the network, and a routine 10 km/h-over fine starts at about AED 300 (≈ EUR 75), paid promptly.

The rule that surprises everyone: zero alcohol

The drink-drive limit is 0.0 — an outright zero, with no margin at all, and it is stricter than Poland’s already-low 0.02. There is no “one beer” allowance here. If you are driving, do not drink, full stop; the consequences in the UAE are severe and not comparable to a Polish points-and-fine system.
