Quick Answer

Yes — a Dutch licence holder can drive in the UAE as a visitor, but you must carry an International Driving Permit alongside your Dutch licence. The two things that catch Dutch drivers are the zero alcohol rule (any reading is an offence) and dense camera enforcement on the right-hand side.

The UAE is built for driving — wide, fast, modern motorways linking Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates. For a Dutch visitor the law is stricter than the smooth tarmac suggests, so here is the verdict first.

A Dutch licence holder can drive in the UAE on a tourist visit, but you must carry an International Driving Permit with your Dutch licence. Unlike much of Europe, the IDP is not optional courtesy here — rental desks ask for it and it is the document that makes your Dutch licence legible to traffic police. Sort the IDP in the Netherlands before departure; it cannot be issued in the UAE.

The rule most likely to ruin a trip is alcohol. The UAE enforces a flat zero limit — there is no 0.05 margin you might be used to at home, and any reading at all is an offence with serious consequences. If you are driving, do not drink, full stop.

Traffic flows on the right, the same as the Netherlands, so there is no side switch to manage — the adjustment is speed and enforcement instead. Motorways are signed up to 120 km/h, rural roads 100, and towns 60, but the country is blanketed with fixed and average-speed cameras. A standard speeding penalty starts around AED 300 (≈ €75), and fines attach to the vehicle, so a rental firm will simply bill your card. The radar tolerance is small, so set your cruise control honestly. Fuel is cheap at about $0.75 a litre and the emergency number is 999.
