Can an Italian Drive in the UAE? — IDP Required, Zero-Alcohol Limit

The UAE is an easy place to drive in the mechanical sense — wide, modern, well-surfaced roads — but for an Italian visitor it carries two hard rules that leave no room for error: the permit you need to be legal, and an alcohol limit set at absolute zero.

The verdict for Italian licence holders

As a tourist you cannot rely on your Italian licence alone. An International Driving Permit is required, and UAE rental agencies will ask for it before they hand over keys — carry the IDP with your Italian licence and passport. Your home licence is recognised for short stays of up to six months when paired with the IDP; longer stays move you toward a local conversion. The UAE drives on the right, the same as Italy, so the side of the road is not an issue.

The rule with no margin: zero alcohol

The number that matters most is the blood-alcohol limit of 0.0. This is not a low limit — it is a complete prohibition, and it is stricter than Italy’s 0.05 by a wide gulf. There is no “one glass with dinner” allowance, and the consequences of being caught are severe for a foreign driver. If you are driving, do not drink at all.

Fast roads, constant cameras

Limits run to 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, and the driving culture is genuinely quick. The catch is enforcement: fixed and mobile speed cameras blanket the network, including average-speed zones, and a fine from around AED 300 (about €75) lands automatically. Stay within the posted figure and watch for the lower limits that appear suddenly near interchanges. The emergency number is 999.
