UAE on an Irish Licence — IDP Required, the Side Switch & Zero Alcohol

The UAE is one of the easiest places in the region to hire a car — excellent roads, clear signage, cheap fuel — but for an Irish driver there are three firm rules to get right before turning a wheel.

The verdict: an IDP is required

Unlike much of Europe, the UAE does not simply wave through a foreign licence for tourists. An Irish visitor must carry an International Driving Permit alongside the Irish licence, and rental agencies will ask for it. Apply in Ireland before you fly — it cannot be obtained on arrival. Your home licence covers stays of up to 6 months; beyond that you would be looking at a local conversion.

The side switch is real

Ireland drives on the left; the UAE drives on the right. The roads here are fast, wide and camera-heavy, which makes the first day the one to take slowly — pulling away, joining a multi-lane roundabout that now flows the other way, and the instinctive glance in the wrong direction. Stay deliberate at every junction until the new side settles.

Alcohol is an absolute zero

The drink-drive limit is 0.0, enforced with genuine zero tolerance and far stricter than Ireland’s 0.05. Any trace can lead to arrest, not just a fine. The only safe rule is no alcohol at all before driving.

Speeds, cameras and the basics

Limits run 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, and speed cameras are everywhere — enforcement is automated and consistent.
