Quick Answer

An Indian licence holder can drive in the UAE as a tourist, but an International Driving Permit is required alongside the Indian licence — rental agencies will not hand over keys without one. Three things actually catch Indian drivers: switching from left- to right-hand traffic, a zero blood-alcohol limit (against India's 0.03), and dense speed-camera enforcement on fast, modern motorways.

The Emirates are a popular self-drive destination for Indian travellers, and the roads themselves are superb — wide, smooth, fast. The trap is assuming “good roads” means “easy driving”; for an Indian licence holder there are three specific adjustments, and the paperwork is only the first.

Can an Indian licence holder drive in the UAE? As a tourist, yes — but an International Driving Permit is required, carried alongside your Indian licence and passport. This is not a soft recommendation: rental agencies will not release a car without the IDP, so arrange it in India before you fly. (UAE residents convert their licence under a different process; this is about visitors.)

The first road adjustment is direction. India drives on the left; the UAE drives on the right, and the side switch is more consequential here than on a quiet back road because the Emirates’ motorways are fast and unforgiving. The danger window is your first hour — joining a six-lane highway, reading exits that come up quickly, and resisting the reflex to glance the wrong way at a junction. Take the first stretch slowly.

The second is alcohol, and it is absolute. The UAE runs a zero blood-alcohol limit — stricter than India’s 0.03 and with no “one drink” margin whatsoever. Penalties are heavy and the safest policy is simply not to drink before driving at all. The third is enforcement: speed cameras blanket the major roads, often where you least expect them, and fines arrive automatically. Documented limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 on rural roads and 60 in town, but the cameras hold you to them precisely, and a speeding penalty starts around AED 300 (roughly €75).

A few practical truths: fuel is cheap at around $0.75 a litre, the emergency number is 999, and Indian drivers used to dense, improvised traffic will find the UAE’s lane discipline strict and enforced — drift between lanes without indicating and that, too, is fined.

As a tourist, yes — but you must carry an International Driving Permit with your Indian licence; rental agencies require it. UAE residents on an Indian licence follow a separate conversion route, but for a visit the IDP is the key document.

The right — the opposite of India's left. On the Emirates' fast, multi-lane motorways the wrong-side reflex is genuinely dangerous, so take your first session carefully and be deliberate at every junction.

Zero. The UAE enforces a 0.0 blood-alcohol limit, stricter than India's 0.03, and penalties are severe. Do not drink at all before driving.
