Can a German Drive in the UAE? — IDP Required + Zero Alcohol

German drivers will find the UAE’s roads immaculate and the cars familiar, but two assumptions from home do not travel: your EU licence is not enough on its own here, and there is no derestricted autobahn — every fast road is policed by camera.

The verdict for German licence holders

Inside the EU your German licence is all you need, but the UAE is outside that system, so an International Driving Permit is required alongside it. Carry the IDP, your German licence and your passport together, and obtain the IDP through ADAC or another German issuer before you fly — it cannot be issued on arrival. Rental desks will refuse a booking without it.

No side switch, a stricter alcohol limit

Both Germany and the UAE drive on the right, so junctions and roundabouts need no relearning. Alcohol is where the gap opens: Germany’s 0.05 allows a small margin, but the UAE enforces an absolute 0.0. Any detectable trace is an offence and the penalties can include arrest, not just a fine. Forget the “one beer” allowance entirely — nothing before driving.

No autobahn — and cameras everywhere

This is the adjustment German drivers underestimate: there is no derestricted stretch anywhere. Limits are 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, firmly capped and rigorously enforced by cameras on nearly every road, many of them hidden. A modest overspeed of around 10 km/h costs roughly AED 300 (about €75). Set your speed to the posted limit and hold it — the open highway is not an invitation to push on as you might at home.
