Can a French Driver Drive in the UAE? — IDP Required and a Zero Alcohol Limit

Driving in the UAE feels familiar to a French motorist in one way — you stay on the right — and unfamiliar in almost every other. The roads are wide, fast and immaculate, the enforcement is automated and unforgiving, and the paperwork is stricter than anything you are used to inside the EU.

The verdict for French licence holders

You can drive in the UAE on your French licence, but an International Driving Permit is required, not merely recommended. This is the key difference from driving elsewhere in Europe: a French licence travels freely across the EU, but at a UAE rental desk it is the IDP that unlocks the car. Apply for it in France before you fly — it cannot be issued locally — and carry your IDP, your French licence and your passport together. France allows 0.05. The UAE allows nothing — 0.0. This is not a margin to be careful with; it is a hard line backed by heavy penalties, and it applies the moment you are behind the wheel. The cameras do the policing

The UAE rarely needs a traffic officer to catch you — the cameras do it. Fixed units, average-speed sections and radar cover the motorways and the city grid alike, and limits are high (120 km/h on motorways, 100 rural, 60 in town) but enforced to the digit. A typical penalty starts around AED 300 (≈ €75) and is billed to the hire company, which charges it to your card later, often after you have flown home.
