UAE on a Chinese Licence — IDP Required + a True Zero on Alcohol

For Chinese visitors the UAE offers familiar right-hand driving on some of the best roads in the region. The point most travellers miss is the permit: a Chinese licence is not recognised on its own, so the paperwork has to be right before you arrive.

The verdict for Chinese licence holders

You can drive in the UAE, but a Chinese licence is not accepted by itself — an International Driving Permit is required to translate and validate it. Carry the IDP, your Chinese licence and your passport together, and obtain the IDP before you leave China, as it cannot be issued on arrival. Rental desks and police will check for it, and without it your hire booking can be refused.

No side switch, a stricter alcohol rule

Both China and the UAE drive on the right, so there is no reorientation at junctions or roundabouts. Alcohol is where the rules tighten: China’s limit is 0.02, already low, but the UAE enforces an absolute 0.0 — zero tolerance, with penalties that can include arrest rather than just a fine. Treat any amount of alcohol as off-limits before driving; there is no margin to work with.

Fast roads watched by cameras

Limits are 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways, on wide highways built for speed, which is exactly why cameras are everywhere and often hard to spot. Even a small overspeed of around 10 km/h costs roughly AED 300 (about €75), and fines add up quickly across a trip. Keep to the posted number and stay alert for sudden limit drops near towns.
