UAE on a Chinese Licence 2026: No IDP Route, Ask in Writing

China issues no IDP, which the UAE requires for driving and renting outside Dubai. Get a hire firm's written acceptance of your Chinese licence first; traffic keeps right.
For Chinese visitors the UAE offers familiar right-hand driving on wide, modern roads. The permit is where the plan breaks down, and it needs sorting before you book a car rather than at the desk.
The permit problem
Global Affairs Canada says an international driving permit is required to drive and rent a car in the UAE, except in Dubai, where its own citizens can use a Canadian licence. That Dubai exception is written for Canadian licences; nothing in it extends to Chinese ones. China is not a party to the 1949 or 1968 road-traffic conventions and issues no IDP, so a Chinese licence holder has no recognised way to meet the rule outside Dubai. A notarised translation is not an IDP.
If you want a car, ask the rental company in writing and before you pay whether it accepts a Chinese licence, in which emirates, and whether its insurance covers you. If the answer is no, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah all have reliable public transport, and taxis cover the rest. The Driving Permit Checker shows the position in other countries.
No side switch, no alcohol at all
Both China and the UAE drive on the right, so junctions and roundabouts feel normal. The alcohol rule is far stricter than China’s 0.02: the UAE has a zero-tolerance policy, and penalties include heavy fines, jail, vehicle confiscation and licence suspension. Being drunk in public is itself illegal anywhere in the country.
On the road
Canada warns that local drivers often tailgate and drive at excessive speeds, and that sandstorms can make driving difficult for days. Limits vary by road and emirate, so follow the signs. After an accident, stay at the scene, do not move the vehicle and call the police; leaving may be treated as an admission of guilt.
