UAE on a Canadian Licence 2026: IDP Outside Dubai, Zero BAC

In Dubai your Canadian licence is accepted; elsewhere in the UAE you need an IDP to drive or rent. Traffic keeps right as at home, but the legal alcohol limit is zero.
Driving in the Emirates feels familiar to a Canadian: traffic keeps to the right, highways are wide and modern, and hire cars are easy to find. Where you can use your own licence depends on the emirate, and the alcohol rule leaves no room at all.
Which document, where
Global Affairs Canada puts it in one sentence: you must carry an international driving permit to drive and rent a car in the UAE, except in Dubai, where your Canadian driver’s licence can be used. So a trip that stays in Dubai works on the provincial licence; a drive to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah calls for an IDP. Canada issues the permit through CAA, and only before you leave. Carry it with your licence and passport.
Zero means zero
Canada’s Criminal Code draws the line at 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy and a legal limit of zero, and Global Affairs Canada lists the consequences: substantial fines, long prison terms, confiscation of the vehicle and suspension of the licence. Not even one drink with dinner if you are driving afterwards.
Cameras and limits
Limits are posted road by road and vary between emirates and between sections of the same highway, so read the signs rather than assuming a national figure. Fixed cameras are common on the main highways; the Speeding Fine Calculator gives a sense of how fines scale.
If something goes wrong
After a collision, stay at the scene and call the police. Global Affairs Canada warns that leaving may be treated as an admission of guilt in some emirates, that you may be prevented from leaving the country until injury claims are settled, and that a fatal accident can bring a compensation payment to the victim’s family. Police are on 999.
