Quick Answer

An Austrian licence holder needs an International Driving Permit to drive in the UAE — it is required, not merely recommended, and rental agencies will ask for it. Both drive on the right, so there is no side switch. The rule that catches European drivers is alcohol: the UAE enforces an absolute 0.0 limit, where any trace at all can mean arrest rather than a fine.

For an Austrian, the UAE is an easy drive in mechanical terms — same side of the road, superb tarmac, clear English signage — and a strict one in legal terms. Two things separate it from a trip across the Alps: the permit is mandatory, and the alcohol rule has no margin at all.

Can an Austrian licence holder drive in the UAE?

Yes, but with a hard requirement: an International Driving Permit is required for a tourist visit, carried alongside your Austrian licence. This is not the soft “recommended” of many destinations — rental agencies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi will refuse to hand over keys without it, and police checks expect it. Get the IDP from ÖAMTC or ARBÖ in Austria before you fly; you cannot obtain one once you arrive. So “driving in the UAE on an Austrian licence” answers yes, provided the IDP is in your hand.

No side switch — but a faster, stricter road

The UAE drives on the right, the same as Austria, so junctions and roundabouts work the way you expect. What changes is intensity: multi-lane highways move fast and assertively, lane changes are sudden, and speed cameras are everywhere — fixed, mobile and average-speed. Limits run 60 km/h urban, 100 rural and 120 on motorways, often with a small enforced tolerance, and a typical 10 km/h overage costs around AED 300 (≈ €75).

Zero means zero on alcohol

This is the rule that catches European visitors hardest. Austria allows 0.05; the UAE enforces an absolute 0.0. There is no one-drink margin, and the consequence of being caught with any alcohol is not a fine but possible arrest. If you are driving, drink nothing at all — and remember the standard is the same whether you are leaving a hotel bar or a restaurant.

Practical notes

Fuel is cheap at around $0.75 a litre. The emergency number is 999. Carry your IDP, Austrian licence and passport together, and keep a card for tolls (Salik gantries in Dubai are camera-based, with no booths).

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. For a tourist visit on an Austrian licence, an International Driving Permit is required alongside your national licence, and rental agencies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi will insist on it. Arrange the IDP in Austria before you travel — it cannot be obtained in the UAE.

Check if your licence is valid

Yes — the UAE drives on the right, the same as Austria, so there is no side switch. The adjustment is to fast, assertive multi-lane traffic and ever-present speed cameras, not to which side of the road you use.

Zero — a true 0.0. The UAE does not have the small margin Austria allows at 0.05; any detectable alcohol while driving can lead to arrest, not just a fine. Do not drink at all if you intend to drive.
