Ukraine 2026 for British Drivers: Only the 1968 IDP Works
United Kingdom
Ukraine
GOV.UK says you need a 1968 IDP with your UK licence; the 1949 IDP is no longer accepted. Any alcohol in the blood is illegal, and FCDO advises against travel to most of Ukraine.
For a British driver, the licence question in Ukraine has a simple answer — but the rule that actually trips Britons up is not the paperwork, it is how little alcohol the law allows behind the wheel.
The licence verdict for British visitors
Read the travel advice first: the FCDO advises against all travel to most of Ukraine and against all but essential travel to the western regions it lists, including Lviv and Zakarpattia.
If you do drive, GOV.UK says you must have a 1968 International Driving Permit as well as your UK licence, and that the 1949 IDP is no longer accepted. The IDP does not replace your licence, so keep the two together with your passport, and buy the right version in the UK before you leave.
The fact that catches British drivers out: a near-zero alcohol limit
GOV.UK says it is illegal to drive with any alcohol in your blood, a long way from the UK’s 0.08. There is no equivalent of the cautious “one pint” margin some British drivers carry from home; if you are driving, do not drink at all. Enforcement is real, and a stop that turns up alcohol is not a conversation you want in a country whose roads already demand your full attention.
Roads and speeds: drive to the surface, not the sign
Motorway limits reach 130 km/h and towns are 50 km/h, but the headline numbers oversell the experience. Outside the main corridors, road quality is variable, potholes are common, and local driving can be assertive. The realistic approach is to drive to the surface in front of you and leave more room than you would at home. Note that wartime conditions affect parts of the country; check current government travel advice for the regions you intend to drive through before committing to a route. Fuel sits around $1.25 a litre and the emergency number is 112. Speeding fines start low — around UAH 340 for a minor exceedance — but the alcohol penalties are where the real risk lies.
Confirm your documents with the Driving Permit Checker, read the country detail on the Ukraine driving guide, and estimate any penalty before you travel with the Speeding Fine Calculator.
