Can an Indian licence holder drive in Ukraine? Yes — your Indian licence is accepted for the duration of a legal stay, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. Because Ukrainian signage and police paperwork are in Cyrillic, the IDP genuinely earns its place as a translation rather than being a box-tick, so arrange it at home before you fly; it cannot be issued locally.

The biggest practical adjustment is the side of the road. India drives on the left; Ukraine drives on the right. Every reflex — the direction you glance first at a junction, the way a roundabout flows, where you place the car in the lane — runs opposite to habit, and the danger window is your first day, especially pulling out of a forecourt or side street. Take a quiet road to recalibrate before you drive into Kyiv, where traffic is dense and assertive.

The second catch is alcohol. Ukraine’s limit is a near-zero 0.02, which is below India’s 0.03 and effectively means none before driving. Testing is routine and penalties are steep, so there is no “one drink” margin to lean on. On speed, towns are posted at 50 km/h, rural roads at 90, and motorways at 130 — a touch faster than you may expect at the top end, but surfaces are the real story: outside the main routes, potholes, fading markings and unpredictable overtaking are common, so drive to the road rather than the sign.

Carry the mandatory kit — warning triangle, reflective vest, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher — because missing items draw a roadside fine, and being caught short on a required item can cost around UAH 340. Fuel is roughly $1.25 a litre. The emergency number is 112.
