Can an American Drive in Uganda? — Yes with an IDP, and You Switch to the Left
United States
Uganda
Yes — an American licence holder can drive in Uganda as a visitor, with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it. The real adjustment for American drivers is the side switch: the US keeps right, Uganda drives on the left. Carry your IDP, American licence and passport together.
Uganda is prime self-drive territory — the route to the national parks and the shores of Lake Victoria is far better with your own wheels than on a schedule. The licence side is simple; one habit and one road reality are what you prepare for.
The verdict for American licence holders
You can drive in Uganda on your American licence as a visitor, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it. The IDP gives police and rental staff a certified translation of your licence and avoids friction at a roadside check. Arrange it in the US before you fly — it is only issued at home — and keep the IDP, your licence and passport together.
The side switch is the main event
The United States drives on the right; Uganda drives on the left, a holdover from British rule. That reversal is the thing most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your opening hour — pulling out onto the wrong side, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Take your first stretch somewhere quiet rather than in central Kampala, and be deliberate at every turn until left feels normal.
The road reality matters more than the speed limit
Posted limits run to about 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h rural and 100 km/h on the better highways, but the limit is rarely the real constraint. Away from the main corridors, surfaces are uneven, boda-boda motorcycles weave through traffic, livestock appears on the road, and driving after dark carries real risk from unlit vehicles. The alcohol limit is 0.08, matching home, but the conditions make zero the safe rule. Fuel is around $1.25 a litre and the emergency number is 112.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for a visit. An IDP is recommended to carry with your American licence — rental firms and police prefer to see one. Bring the IDP, your licence and passport as a set.
Uganda drives on the left, a legacy of British rule, while the United States drives on the right. Expect a genuine side switch and take your first hour slowly.
Uganda applies a 0.08 blood-alcohol limit — the same figure as the US — but enforcement, road conditions and night-time hazards make zero alcohol the only sensible policy when driving.
