Turkey on a US Licence in 2026: 180 Days and a 0.05 Limit

Your US licence alone is accepted for stays up to 180 days, per the State Department; an IDP is optional. Same side of the road as home, but the alcohol limit is 0.05, not 0.08.
Turkey's 2026 fine ladder starts earlier in town than on the open road: 6 km/h over in a built-up area already costs TRY 2,000, while outside towns the first fine comes at 11 km/h over.
Good news for American drivers: Turkey keeps traffic on the right, the same as home, so there is no side switch to relearn. Paperwork is light too. What needs attention is an alcohol limit lower than you are used to and a fine scale that starts at small overspeeds.
Your licence
The U.S. State Department’s country page says that for stays up to 180 days, “a valid U.S. driver’s license or an International Driving Permit and a U.S. driver’s license is acceptable.” So the US licence on its own is enough for a holiday; an IDP from AAA or AATA is optional. Turkish regulations likewise let a foreign licence be used for six months from the date of entry. Stay longer than 180 days and you need a Turkish licence from the Security Directorate’s traffic department. UK government advice, written for British licence holders, asks them for a 1968 permit or a licence notarised in Turkish; a translation can still smooth things at a rental counter, but the State Department does not require one for US licences. The 0.05 alcohol limit
The trap most likely to catch an American is the alcohol limit: 0.05, below the US 0.08. A second drink at dinner that would leave you legal in most states can put you over in Turkey; the State Department notes the penalties include a fine and a six-month licence confiscation. Plan a driver who is not drinking.
Speed limits and the 2026 fine steps
Speeds run faster than home: 130 km/h (about 81 mph) on motorways, 140 on build-operate-transfer toll motorways, 90 on other roads outside towns, 50 in towns. Turkish traffic is assertive, overtaking is bold and Istanbul congestion is severe, so leave extra room. Since February 2026 fines go in steps. Inside towns, 6-10 km/h over costs TRY 2,000 and 16-20 over TRY 6,000; outside towns nothing is fined below 11 km/h over, and 11-15 over costs TRY 2,000. Winter tyres in Turkey — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Turkey whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (commercial passenger/goods vehicles: mandatory; private cars: not mandatory nationally, subject to provincial order).
