German Licence in Turkey 2026: Valid 6 Months, 130 km/h

Germans heading for the Turkish coast skip the two hurdles that slow most visitors down: there is no permit to apply for and no side of the road to relearn. The friction comes from somewhere else, namely a speed limit on every motorway and a fine scale that now counts in kilometres per hour.

Your licence is recognised

The Auswärtiges Amt puts it in one sentence: the German licence is recognised for tourist stays in Turkey. Turkish traffic regulations allow a foreign licence to be used for six months from the date of entry, so an International Driving Permit is not needed for a holiday. A motorway with a ceiling

Much of the German motorway network has no general speed limit. In Turkey the motorway limit is a binding 130 km/h on state-run motorways and 140 km/h on build-operate-transfer toll motorways, towns are 50 km/h, and outside built-up areas cars may do 90 km/h on two-way roads and 110 km/h on divided highways. Since the law of 27 February 2026 speeding fines follow fixed steps instead of percentages. In towns, 6-10 km/h over costs TRY 2,000, 11-15 over TRY 4,000 and 26-35 over TRY 12,000; outside towns nothing is fined below 11 km/h over, and 11-15 over costs TRY 2,000. Alcohol, accidents and the night

The alcohol limit for private cars is 0.05%, the figure you know from home, but it drops to zero when towing a trailer, which catches people who bring a caravan. The Auswärtiges Amt also warns about two things that do not exist in the German rulebook: after an accident Turkish courts can impose an exit ban until the case is settled, regardless of who was at fault, and driving after dark is riskier because many roads, including larger ones, are unlit. Traffic in the cities is dense, and the Foreign Office notes that rules are often ignored.
