Chinese tourists can drive in Turkey on the same right-hand side as home, so there's no side switch. An International Driving Permit is required alongside your Chinese licence. The genuine challenge is the driving culture — assertive, fast and extreme in Istanbul — and the full kit Turkey makes you carry.
Turkey is one of the more rewarding drives a Chinese visitor can take on — coastline, ruins and mountain roads that buses can’t reach. One thing is genuinely in your favour from the start, and a couple of things need attention before you set off.
The side is the same — that’s the easy part
China and Turkey both drive on the right, so there’s no left-hand reversal to relearn. Your seating position, your roundabout instincts and your overtaking habits all carry over. That removes the biggest hazard most foreign drivers face elsewhere, and lets you focus on what’s actually different here.
The IDP and the equipment are both required
You must carry an International Driving Permit alongside your Chinese licence. Apply in China before you fly — it can’t be issued in Turkey — and your licence covers stays of up to six months. Turkey is also strict on kit: the car must carry a warning triangle, reflective vest, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher, and roadside checks do enforce it. The driving culture is the real adjustment
The challenge in Turkey isn’t a rule — it’s the pace. Driving is assertive, overtaking is constant, and Istanbul traffic is in a league of its own, with lane discipline that comes and goes. Limits are 50 in town, 90 rural and 120 on the motorway, watched by fixed cameras and mobile patrols. The alcohol limit is 0.05 BAC, looser than China’s 0.02, but with active enforcement treat it as zero. Winter tyres in Turkey — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Turkey whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (commercial passenger/goods vehicles: mandatory; private cars: not mandatory nationally, subject to provincial order).
